The Albany Female Academy (now the Albany Academy for girls) was founded in 1814 by Ebenezer Foote, and is the oldest independent school for women in the United States. The four young ladies pictured were all in the First Department of the Academy, and two of them graduated in 1867. The examination for the First Department in 1867 included Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Geology, Natural Science, History, Rhetoric, English Literature, Latin, Butler’s Analogy, Singing, and Reading.
Elmina Antoinette Bigelow was born 11 May 1849 in Albany, New York, the daughter of Doctor Uriah Gregory Bigelow (2 October 1821 - 23 February 1873) and Lovina Zimmer (born 21 October 1818); Elmina was one of five children in the family. Elmina was listed as attending the Albany Female Academy from 1864 through 1867, when she graduated in the First Department. Mina Bigelow passed away on 1 November 1871.
Catherine Quackenbush “Kate” Disney was born 22 July 1846 in Albany, New York, the daughter of sail maker and ship chandler John T. Disney (1813 - 12 April 1865) and Ann Quackenbush (2 May 1817 - 12 December 1879); John and Ann would have at least eight children--five sons and three daughters. Kate was listed as attending the Albany Female Academy from 1862 through 1867. Catherine lived in Albany all of her life and never married. In 1880 she was living with her brother John and sister Emma. In the 1900, 1910, a 1920, and 1925 censuses, she was living with sisters Emma and Adelaide (neither of whom married). Kate, suffering from chronic bronchitis and heart problems, passed away on 9 May 1926.
Grace Marshall was born in September 1846 in Albany, the daughter of William and Mary Marshall; the couple had at least three children. She graduated in the First Department from Albany Female Academy in 1867. Grace married Josiah Tallmadge (1846-1914) circa 1871 and would have four children. Josiah was a corn merchant and later a real estate broker. Grace Marshall passed away on 9 September 1900.
Margaret A. Pomfret was born 1 July 1848 in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of English immigrant Doctor James Pomfret (1826-1869) and Almeda Holoway Chase (1825-1898); the couple would have at least three children. In 1850 Margaret was living in Providence with her parents, but by the time of the 1860 the family had relocated to Albany, New York. Margaret attended the Albany Female Academy from 1860 through 1867. On 10 August 1867, Margaret married Doctor Alfred Birch Huested; Dr. Huested was a Brevet Lt. Colonel who had served in the Civil War as a surgeon for the 21st N.Y. Cavalry Regiment (21 March 1864 - 25 June 1866). In the 1925 and 1930 censuses, Margaret was a widow living with her son Frank and his wife. Margaret Pomfret Huested passed away on 21 August 1936.

Eugene Scott Morris Haines was born 15 November 1833 in New Jersey, the son of Alexander F. Haines (born circa 1812) and Elizabeth Terhune Earles. He was married on 23 June 1862 to Julia Frances Joslin (born circa 1840) and they had at least one child. During 1861-1870 he had a photography studio at 478 Broadway in Albany, New York, and was in partnership with William H. Wickes from circa 1864 through 1867. He remained in Albany until circa 1883 when he moved to Boston and then New Britain, Connecticut, and continued to work as a photographer. In 1900, he was living in Brooklyn, New York, and was working as a bookkeeper. Haines passed away on 3 July 1909. Other studio locations were as follows, from directories.
