The Taschachferner is situated in the Ötztal Alps, in the Austrian state Tyrol. The glacier consists of two parts: a larger eastern part north of the Wildspitze, and a western part disintegrating into many smaller fragments. Towards the end of the 20th century, due to glacier retreat, both parts have lost contact. Starting from 2003 a glacial lake formed near the end of the eastern glacier. In 2006 the total surface area measured 5,71 km². Since 1970 the tongue has receded by more than 250 m, 104 metres between 2004 and 2005 alone, a record among the Eastern Alps glaciers. The wreckage of an American B-17 bomber, crashed on the glacier during the Second World War, was exposed several years by the melting. The former lowest icefall, which is still found on many maps, has disappeared almost completely. Today the glacier tongue ends at a height of 2.200 m. Source: www.wikipedia.org
