Lights of Dettifoss
From www.paulweeksphotography.com.
While there are thousands of waterfalls across Iceland, only a handful of them are truly scary to stand next to. This gigantic falls called Dettifoss is located in a remote part of Northern Iceland, and every time I go there it scares the hell out of me!
Besides this river, a small one-lane track and a few rock piles, there is nothing to see here. The whole area looks a lot like the surface of the moon, actually. Last Fall my buddy Dave and I were at this waterfall during an epic solar storm that lasted most of the night.
Sitting in the dark, listening to the incredibly loud roar of the falls, watching a rainbow light show explode through the sky... it gave me a very sobering sense of presence. I'm not sure how else to describe it. It was the same feeling that experiencing nature usually brings, just on a larger, and slightly more terrifying scale.
