Growing pumpkins
Explaining the lava rock walls.
The walls of lava rock are found in the Azores everywhere. Why? Not only because the whole Azores actually consist of lava rocks so they have plenty of them, but mainly to prevent erosion.
For a farmer, even when farming on a small scale, it's a disaster when fertile soil washes out to sea.
The walls also protect well against wind and seawater
It can rain hard and longlasting especially on the western islands. That explains also the very green and lushy vegetation.
This little farmer has therefore black lava rocks around his small piece of land, making sure his pumpkins will grow instead of ending up somewhere in the ocean.
Especially on Pico Island the pieces of land are sometimes so small that it's hard to imagine how a farmer can make a living from them. Watch later in my series about Pico.
Fajã dos Vimes, São Jorge, Azores, Portugal.
