2019 - Rhaetian Railway in Val Bernina
The Rhaetian Railway is an exemplary railway development for the disenclavement of the Central Alps at the beginning of the 20th century. The Rhaetian Railway has been part of the Swiss Canton of Graubünden since 1889. It is now impossible to imagine this region, one of the most beautiful in Switzerland, without its world-famous railway.
This image was taken at the end of the day when the train emerges from the last bend before Lagalp in Val Bernina. It is interesting to note that these large bends are onlly designed to reduce the slope of the trajectory.
Weather in these high alpine valleys can be extremely harsh during the Winter season when high winds and snow sweep the area.
