Volvo 760 Turbo Concept - 1982
In the early 80s Volvo became interested in the opportunity to compete in a new series for standard saloon cars in the new group A category championship, which also included the European championship.
Volvo's first idea was to drop a 4 cylinder, 2,3-litre turbo engine, producing over 300 hp, into the 760 meeting group A regulations. The regulations penalized turbo engines by adding a capacity coefficient, which meant that the 760 with a 2,3-litre engine would compete against cars with non-turbo engines over 3-litres.
Volvo then decided it would be better to run the 240 Turbo to which, later on, much of the development work done on the 760 project could be successfully applied.
