Mercedes 300 SL Roadster Prototype - 1955
W198II
To meet the perceived American demand for a roadster version of the 300 SL voiced by New York dealer Max Hoffman, this first prototype was completed in the Sindelfingen test centre at the end of October 1955 and underwent a program of test drives. It differs in many details from the production cars, post notably in the use of steel, rather than cast aluminum, doors and a unique bonnet and grille. Unique, too, are the metal instrument panel and steering wheel with deep-set hub.
