Porsche 904 Carrera GTS - 1964
Chassis n° 904-052
The 904 all-rounder : Jo Schlesser's rally car.
With the introduction of the 904 designed by Ferdinand Alexander 'Butzi' Porsche, the company drew an end not only to the era of aluminium bodywork in favour of GRP (glass fibre plastics) bodywork, but also to any further developments of the 4-cylinder Fuhrmann engine with its four overhead camshafts which was based on the old VW engine and perhaps better known as the Carrera engine.
The new bodywork, manufactured by airplane builders Heinkel in Speyer, is bonded to a box-section frame of sheet steel. The plastic is a glass fibre reinforced polyester resin from BASF. Interestingly, the GT rules of the time also prescribed a boot. This is actually integrated into the hinged boot lid. Our car, chassis n° 052, was previously owned by the famous French F1 racing driver Jo Schlesser. He primarily used the car for rallies and circuit racing and it still has its original engine.
