Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Convertible - 1962

Coachwork by H.J. Mulliner

One of only 75 original left-hand drive Silver Cloud II two-door drophead coupés built by H J Mulliner, this example was imported into the USA by Rolls-Royce Inc and sold via the official distributor J S Inskip of New York. This car has a very interesting ownership history. Chassis number 'LSAE583' was first registered to Wilbur S 'Bill' Todman, the American radio and television producer responsible for a succession of innovative and influential shows including 'Beat the Clock', 'The Price is Right', and 'What's My Line?' Regarded as American TV royalty, Bill Todman was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2011.

The Rolls-Royce stayed in the Todman family's ownership, passing in 1978 to Wilbur's son, Bill Todman Jr, the internationally renowned film producer, who owned the car up until the current vendor purchased it directly from him, making this wonderful Silver Cloud II a genuine two-private-owner example.

Restored to an exemplary standard at some time in the past, this Silver Cloud remains in generally very good to excellent condition. The body panels present well in all areas; panel gaps are excellent, and the doors and boot open and close smoothly. The Ivory paintwork is virtually unblemished, and the chrome remains bright and un-pitted. Engine compartment detailing is exceptional.

Inside, the Rolls Royce is the very quintessence of luxury, boasting picnic tables to the rear, and split front seats. The seats are upholstered in unmarked blue leather, while the matching carpets show no evidence of use and the wooden trim is exceptional. The folding top is in excellent condition both inside and out, with the electric mechanism fully operational.

The engine starts readily whether cold or hot, the automatic transmission changes gear smoothly, and the brakes function correctly. All instruments are functioning, showing good oil pressure, water temperature, and rate of electrical charge. The luggage compartment contains the correct tools. Contained within the history folder, accompanying documentation includes copies of the original factory build sheets and a UK V5C Registration Certificate.

Highly sought after by connoisseurs of fine automobiles, these limited edition, coachbuilt Rolls-Royces are rarely offered for sale, and this example has to be one of the very best currently available. Highly usable and ready for the Côte d'Azur, it affords the prospect of one of the ultimate driving experiences. An absolutely stunning example.
