Hillman Minx Series III A - 1960
Now and again, special quotas of Western-built passenger cars were imported to East Germany for private use. Like more exclusive East German cars (e.g. the Wartburg 313/1) these vehicles were primarily destined for privileged citizens. The owners usually were either 'deserving' East German citizens, such as party officials, employees of state agencies, etc., or residents of Berlin (East).
Passenger cars made by the British manufacturer Hillman were imported to East Germany until the early 1960s. They were joined in the 1970s by other Western brands such as Volvo, Volkswagen, Citroën and Mazda. In the late 1980s, only 1,5 % of all passenger cars in East Germany were Western makes.
