In late 1968, Mercedes complemented the mid-sized series launched earlier that year by the addition of two coupé models of which the 250 CE was one. Because of the year the cars were launched, their models designations were internally given the suffix "/8". With some 1,8 million sedans and 67.000 units of the sporty, exclusive two-doors produced, the Stroke Eight was the brand's first million seller.
