Toyota Corolla 2-door Sedan - 1968

KE10

The Corolla and the Datsun Sunny were both launched in 1966. These cars really marked the beginning of the mass private car ownership in Japan. The Corolla, released six months after the Sunny, was above average on every count : body size, styling, engine displacement, performance, equipment, and feel. It quickly grabbed the hearts of Japanese consumers and became a huge success. Abandoning the 1.000 cc engine common to cars of this class, the Corolla was fitted with a 1.100 cc engine. "The extra 100 cc gives you the edge" went the add copy, reflecting the Corolla's above-average performance. Unlike most passenger cars of its time, the Corolla had a floor gearshift instead of a steering column shift. As a result, the floor shift gained a sporty image under the influence of the Corolla, and it soon became the norm in Japan. When the Corolla developed as Company's key volume seller, the Takaoka Plant was erected to produce this model.
