Toyota Publica Super 800 - 1966

This is a sporty version of the Publica, Toyota's entry model during the mid sixties. Publica was Toyota's response of the 'People's Car' project. The name was a play on the words 'public' and 'car', which followed on a nationwide naming campaign. It was launched in 1961. The car with an air-cooled flat twin engine was significantly practical and economical. Despite the competitive price, sales fell short of the projected figure. Realizing that over-emphasis on simple practicality was a mistake : Toyota added the De Luxe model two years later and the sales soared. In April 1966 the engine displacement increased from 700 cc to 800 cc. The Publica 800 Super had a twin carburetor engine, and offered a revolution counter. Floor mounted gearshift lever and special sporty seats. Its top speed was 130 km/h, 15 km/h faster than a standard Publica.
