Audi Quattro Spyder Concept - 1991

The design study was the sensation of the Frankfurt IAA in 1991 : It was the most consistent interpretation of the sports-car theme that Audi had exhibited up to that time.

The mid-engined concept promised good weight distribution and the transverse V6 engine ample reserves of power.

More significant still : the Audi Quattro Spyder, with its aluminium body, weighed only 1.100 kg.

Speculation that Audi was planning a small batch of production cars led to the company's dealers receiving hundred of firm enquiries, sometimes even accompanied by cash deposits.

However, it became clear that the car could not to be built to sell at a price less than 100.000 German Marks, and so it never progressed past the prototype stage.
