Porsche 960 P.E.S. Concept - 1980

Porsche presented the P.E.S. (Porsche Experimental Structure) research concept car in October 1980 at the 8th ESV Conference, a conference on the construction of experimental safety vehicles. The project was based on the Porsche 928 type sports car.

The goal was reduce fuel consumption by all possible technical means without any compromises in safety for the project car named the Type 960.

Along with mechanical design innovations such as the form-optimised dual pipe side members, material selected played an especially important role. As a result, not only were the doors, wings and bonnet made of this material.

Optimised pedestrian and occupant safety were also key development goals. The body-in-white was distinguished by the first application of high-strength HSLA steels in the automotive industry.

The car's drive unit was a thermodynamically optimized 8-cylinder engine (compression 12,5:1) with cylinder deactivation and a Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK).

As is typical of Porsche, numerous innovations of this concept were utilized in later generations of vehicles.
