Audi Avus Quattro Concept - 1991
Only a month after exhibiting the Quattro Spyder at the 1991 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi created a second sensation at the Tokyo Show with an even more dramatic sports car design study, The Avus Quattro.
The highly polished body symbolized Audi's systematic pursuit of weight-saving features and its use of aluminium.
As with the Quattro Spyder, Audi's engineers adopted a mid-engine layout for the Avus Quattro, though this time with twice the number of cylinders.
Under the engine cover of the Avus was a mighty power unit with three banks of cylinders arranged in a manner that earned it the designation "W12", and capable of developing more than 500 hp.
