BMW 502 'Loof' Concept - 1954
Coachwork by Baur
Aiming to create a postwar sports car worthy of the brand, in 1954 BMW took a shortened sedan chassis with a 3.186 cc V8 engine and fitted it with an aerodynamic body designed in-house by Heinz Jacht and built by Baur in Stuttgart. Tested at the Nurburgring by former BMW racing director Ernst Loof, the car proved capable of 200 km/h. However, project 502 won few friends and was shelved. The day was saved when US importer Max Hofman employed Count Albrecht Goertz to create the 507.
