Volkswagen Öko Polo Concept - 1988
In 1988 Volkswagen introduced a prototype with two-cylinder diesel engine and direct fuel injection. A G40 supercharger increased the performance to 40 hp. A system which opened the clutch and allowed the car to freewheel under its own motional energy and a start-stop system were also used. With such features, the Eco Polo consumed less than two liters of diesel per 100 km.
