Quad DQs

Finally got the chance to visit the Smallest Australian state, for some train pics! TasRail run the 843 km (523.82 mi) 3 ft 6 in (narrow) gauge Railway Network across the Island State. In effect there are only 9 separate trains at the busiest time. 3 Intermodal trains made up of 6 sets (1 at each end of the state usually), 1 Coal train, 1 Ore Train and 1 Cement train.

Pictured here at Burnie, in the North-West of the state, the 3 times weekly Ore train from Burnie to Primrose has just got underway and is climbing the grade immediately after departing the yard. Running as train No.77 this train will spend the next 4 hours running through to Rosebery Mine loading point at Primrose, returning in the evening. Ex QR 1460/1502 class locos DQ 2012, 2001, 2008 and 2006 lead the train. These locos went to New Zealand in 1995 for rebuild and service with Tranz Rail (16 DQ's and 6 QRs) before Wisconsin Central took over and transferred 12 DQs and 4 QRs to Tasmania in 1997 where they have lived ever since. 7 of these are currently in service with TasRail, and the balance stored.
