Symmetry and Flow

There is a certain appeal that railroad tracks have for my brain. I think it's the symmetry of the precisely gauged rails that can simultaneously flow in graceful arcs. There is also a metaphor in that vision, but I haven't been able to identify it definitively. Any ideas?
