Lye solution

The lye solution- lye pellets mixed into distilled water. The chemical reaction between the water and lye creates heat, and raises the temperature to around 180-190 degrees. It is melting the ice beneath the Pyrex measuring cup. Always mix lye into the water or you can cause a "lye volcano". Lye is highly caustic and can cause chemical burns.
