Took another swing at the Russell Preston Brown processing method. 1) added frames to the stack by increasing exposure by two levels for each of the original seven frames in the bracket, then 2) did a much more careful (and time consuming) alignment of all of the frames in the stack. This seems to have eliminated most of the banding artifacts I had noticed in my earlier stacking attempts. Tedious, but the results seem better.
