Switch Engine

This switch engine is an addition to the collection at the railroad museum at Cowan, TN. - Or it has been added since I was last there. The museum was open yesterday afternoon and a knowledgeable young man, who wants to work for the railroad after he graduates from high school, was kind enough to show me the engine. It is powered by two large V8 fuel injected diesel engines. The diesels power generators that provide electricity for the drive motors. This engine has a seat for one engineer in the cabin along with the engine controls in various cabinets. From what I was able to see, the controls were conventional relay logic. There were some big contactor relays and some that were not so big, probably controlling the contactor relays. It would be interesting to see the schematic of the control system. It has probably not changed significantly in the last 50 years.
