Ranui Study I: Sunrise (DSC09734)
Church of Saint John in Ranui, Santa Maddalena, South Tyrol, Italy
The little church in the meadow is the quintessential image of the Dolomites, that mountainous region lying in Northern Italy but which is culturally Germanic. The onion-domed chapel dedicated to St John of Nepomuk was built in 1744, in the baroque style so typical of the South Tyrol, as a place of worship for the House of Ranui in the Val di Funes. It is situated – by immaculate design – alone in the grass and in front of the spectacular Odle mountain range. These six photographs show the landscape in a range of lighting conditions, from sunrise to sunset in a glorious week in September.
