Brouq Nature Reserve, Qatar
In 2014, four enormous standing steel plates appeared, perfectly aligned, in the Brouq Nature Reserve in western Qatar. It transpired that the plates were an installation by American process artist Richard Serra entitled East-West/West-East. These photographs show some of the plates, set against the desolate Qatari desert. They remind me of Roland Emmerich’s 1994 science fiction film Stargate, where an ancient portal is discovered in Egypt which creates a wormhole enabling inter-dimensional travel.
