The Fire Lake (DSC3639)

Lagoa do Fogo, Ribeira Grande, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal

Lagoa do Fogo or the Fire Lake is one of the largest caldera lakes on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, known as the Hawaii of Europe. The island is pockmarked with the remnants of violent volcanic eruptions, which are now idyllic lakes. The top part of the Água de Pau Massif stratovolcano collapsed 5000 years ago, but the last eruption was in 1563. On a clear July day, the Atlantic Ocean is visible out of the back of the crater, whilst visitors dot the beaches in the peninsula below.
