The Old Elon Store
I have driven by the Old Elon Store for years. This time I chose to stop and take some photos. And later check on the Store's history. The "old store" is the focal point but I liked the road running into the distance as we were on a ridge.
Some of my English friends, and others in Europe, have historical places hundreds of years old, perhaps several thousand. Not here, if anything is around 150 years old; it is old because the land wasn't settled until into the 1800s.
I found that Elon is the highest point in Allamakee county and is located on an old Indian trail that connected the town of Waukon to the Mississippi River.
The store was built in 1874 by Edward Roese and his wife and they operated the store which also served as a Post Office until they sold it in 1907. Locally the store was known as the Roese General Store and ran by the family until it was sold and renamed the Roe Brothers General Store, after the new owners.
"The “old Elon Store” which served so many years as the village post office still lives. After a succession of owner-operators between 1921 and 1980, the property was offered at public auction in September 1986. There were no bidders. However, Grant L. Hagen and his wife, Pat, were primarily interested in preserving the building as a historical landmark. They purchased the old store/post office for that purpose.
For a period “AI Christopherson, an Evangelist from Marion [Iowa] and Grant Hagen have enjoyed a little interest in holding Gospel meeting and Bible Studies in the store.[23] So today when people pass through Elon they may still see the General Store/Post Office building bearing identification as “Old Elon Store” and a biblical forewarning “It is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment.” (Heb. 9: 27)"
