Despite its dominant position after last year's victory and Peugeot's abrupt withdrawal from contention, Audi hedged its bets for 2012 with not only four factory entries, but two similar but substantially different types of car. Numbers 1 and 2 used a flywheel hybrid system to the front axle on top of the usual turbodiesel, while numbers 3 and 4 made do with the standard powertrain and a slightly larger fuel allowance. The hybrid cars, dubbed the "e-tron quattro" could be distinguished from the other two, the "R18 Ultra" by paint scheme- the former wore silver trim over white, while the latter as shown here used silver trim over black.
