Susquehanna River Replacement

Amtrak ACS-64 no. 642 is seen leading train 56(2) across the Susquehanna River Bridge. Early action construction has begun on the replacement for the bridge, which was built in 1906, with two new 2-track bridges, thus doubling the number of tracks crossing the river and increasing train speeds across the bridge. This early action work includes removing the abandoned piers next to the existing bridge, which are remnants of the bridge built by the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad in 1866.
