A Manhattan-bound (D) train descends the grade from Smith-9th Sts with the iconic Lower Manhattan skyline in the background.
(D) trains were routed via the 8th Avenue and Culver Lines to Church Ave and (F) trains via the 4th Avenue and West End Lines to Coney Island due to track work on the 53rd Street Line. The connection between the 8th Avenue and 6th Avenue Lines is only for the local tracks, thus (D) trains couldn't operate via 8th Avenue over the Manhattan Bridge.
The (D) service did used to run this way though, as shown by my 1948 Board of Transportation subway map.
