Air Service Airship C2 Destroyed by Fire The Army Airship C2 enroute from California to Langley Field caught fire and was destroyed while being maneuvered out of a hangar San Antonio Tex prior to resuming its journey Seven were injured including Maj NA Strauss the commander of the ship but none seriously The following telegram sent by Major Strauss to the War gives a detailed account of the mishap C2 completely destroyed while maneuvering from hangar 9.15 this morning Cross hangar wind of fifteen miles with stronger gusts Handling crew of 100 men When was approximately one half out of hangar strong gusts ship to ground Orders given to maneuver ship back hangar immediately After maneuver started section of six feet in diameter to which handling guys and patches secured pulled out followed by breaking of two windward handling guys then followed by falling off of patches third windward handling guy Ship went to leeward into door resulting in breaking up of car and tearing of together with rupture of gasoline tank Approximately one half minute after this occurred hydrogen caught with partial explosion followed by complete burning of except three surfaces The injured are Major Strauss commander Sergeant AD engineer Maj John MacD Thompson 8th Corps Area Headquarters Capt Nelson Valker Ben Baines newspaper reporter Sergeant Harry Bills and Garcia Noranjo None was hurt seriously The C2 started on its transcontinental fiight from Langley Field Va on Sept 24 at 12.22 am The purposes of the flight were to establish a transcontinental airship route assist in the location of possible emergency landing fields both heavier than air and lighter than air craft and to demonstrate the capabilities of the present training type of airship
