George Luther Stearns was instrumental in recruiting the 54th Regiment, the all-black regiment from the movie "Glory."
He also was one of the "Secret Six" who funded John Brown. providing all the weapons used by Brown in his assault on Harpers Ferry. "Following Brown's arrest, Stearns briefly fled to Canada, but returned to Medford to face inquiry following Brown's death."
