Mary, Queen of Heaven (detail). Springbok Circular puzzle, 500 pieces. Date 1966

I thought it was about time this puzzle was opened and put together, it has waited 48 years! It's rather special opening a puzzle this age and the quality is amazing.

To extend the enjoyment time I completed it without referring to the picture and didn't put the edge together first.

The artist is known as 'The Master of the Saint Lucy Legend'. In the early Renaissance it was not customary for painters to sign their work. They are identified by a well-known work or by the town in which they worked. Thus the Master of the St. Lucy Legend is identified by a series of panels located in the Church of Saint Jacques in Bruges, which illustrate the legend of St Lucy, a Roman Christian girl. This painting was done in 1480. The painter often included detailed views of of the city of Bruges in the background of his works.

The title of this painting was suggested by the music being performed by the angels that float round the majestic figure of the Virgin. The notation on the sheets of music held by the angels either side of Mary's head is actually legible and has been identified as 'Hail, Queen of the Heavens'.
