Daniel Merriam, Flight of Scarlet. Artifact wooden puzzle, limited edition 158/2000.
My inspiration for buying this puzzle came from the lovely Merriam puzzle, On the Go that was done by dajavous not so long ago.
To date this is my favourite laser cut wooden puzzle. I very much enjoyed Merriam's beautiful painting and Tara Flannery's puzzle design which kept me intrigued from beginning to end. The edge pieces were placed towards the end. The curved corner pieces were a big surprise keeping me guessing until the end.
I thought it was a shame that the puzzle label on the box did not mention the puzzle designer.
The puzzle comes in an unfinished pine wood box with a sliding lid which is the only thing I didn't really like. I also purchased a smaller puzzle which came in a very nice good quality cardboard box with a magnetic clasp. Although I don't like my chances ,I will put in a special request for the lovely cardboard boxes when I next order.
In comparison to the Wentworth and Liberty puzzles I thought this puzzle was better value for money. It is priced roughly the same as the other two but is more interesting because the cut is designed specifically for the picture.
The smoke aroma ( from the laser burn) was mild on opening the puzzle and disappeared completely quickly, unlike the Liberty product.
As far as the feel/quality of the pieces goes, the quality is very good but I prefer the feel and the weight of the Wentworth pieces. Although not as thick, I like the tile ( difficult to describe) feel of the Wentworth product. I think they are made of a denser material than the plywood product of Artifact and Liberty.
A have two more Artifact puzzles to enjoy as I had to buy more than one to make the expensive international shipping worthwhile :-)
