St. John Knight’s Cedric Sevilla (6) blocks Notre Dame Royals Kevin Tainatongo (28) from the ball during the IIAAG High School Soccer game at the St. Johns field.
THE St. John's School Knights (5-2) defended their home field yesterday in IIAAG high school boys' soccer, besting the visiting Notre Dame High School Royals (4-2-1) by a final score of 4-1 at SJS field in Upper Tumon.
Knights forward T.J. Atalig set an example for his teammates to follow, tallying a brace (two goals) to lead the team to victory.
"We need to play just a little bit harder," said Atalig. "We're doing good, but we have a lot of work to do before playoffs."
Back-to-back early goals by the Knights saw the team seize command of the match in the first half of play. Forward Robert Lee scored first in the 23rd minute, while Atalig added another in the 24th for a 2-0 lead which the team hung onto going in to halftime.
In the 51st minute of the second half, a (Reed Meyer) Knights' hand-ball inside the box gave the Royals a penalty kick. Center-mid player Samson Sheppard took the shot which he converted on goal keeper Ryota Nault of the Knights, cutting the lead 2-1.
However, the Knights countered in the 58th minute, as Cedric Sevilla assisted Atalig in scoring the player's second goal, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead.
"T.J. is one of our leaders – a role model for the whole team. He tries to win every ball and he gets rewards for that," said Knights Head Coach Jimmy Okuhama.
Following a corner kick, Jose Bendana netted a goal over Royals keeper Dominic Bascon for a final 4-1 advantage in the 64th minute.
Okuhama added of his team: "They are improving a lot. Just because there are no seniors, I treat them more as a developing team, but they're learning really fast. Hopefully by the time playoffs come, we can be a competitive team against Southern High School and Father Duenas – the only teams we've lost to."
