“A Face Disorder”, Pencil and Water Color Pencil, 17” x 14” (2012)
This shows disintegration due to the corruption in the modern world. The choices that we humans make are often deleterious, bringing huge consequences not only upon ourselves but also the world. The economic crisis in the US, the government corruption in the Middle East, and global warming are just a few of the problems from a long list of grave matters prevalent in our society. The great shock, however, is that we are the monsters that cause our own destruction. The poem “The Second Coming” by Yeats particularly inspired me to create this piece. Yeats mentions that “the center cannot hold” and that “things fall apart.” In the same way, this artwork portrays the “falling apart” of a human face, which symbolizes the loss of our identity amidst great chaos. The hands dissembling the facial parts signify that we are the ones who create the disorder. The background is characterized by dark colors to convey our flaws and geometric shapes to emphasize the harshness of the modern world.
