Meet at Wilhoit in 1965

When Greg McDonnell was still editing Kalmbach's annual, "Locomotive," I was delighted he asked me to provide a few contributions. In this case, Greg asked if I might have a photo of L&N 314 in service. Yes, I did---four or five in fact. His interest was the ongoing restoration of this unit at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union. My best shot--a black and white of the unit leading L&N train 65 in a meet with opposite number 66 at Wilhoit, Ky. on May 29, 1965--was accompanied by a short text explaining the significance of the 314.

I really like this shot in black and white, as Kodak intended, but I decided to colorize it just for fun. There was also a "going away" shot I colorized as well. Train 65's brand new caboose that day was No. 1148, one of many bay window cabooses built new at the L&N's South Louisville Shops. RS-3 No. 138 was later selected for an experimental repowering with an EMD prime mover, coming out of the shop in an attractive blue paint scheme with a yellow-gold band.

Sadly, "Locomotive" expired along with Kalmbach Publishing. Greg did a superb job, and I still read through the issues I kept. Thanks, Greg, for allowing me a chance to participate. It was my honor.

Do I wish I had Kodachrome in my camera that day rather than Tri-X Pan monochrome film? I don't know. I'll always prefer my "classic" black and whites over the "phony" color versions.
