A Brice unit coal train approaches the crest of a momentum curve at Olinger, Va. on January 22, 2019, at 5:04 PM. My uncle, Rex Yonce, was head brakeman on the Norton Local with J4A No. 1899 when it derailed all eight drivers coming around the same curve. The engineer and fireman bailed, but Rex stayed on, closed the throttle, and brought the train to a stop. After the 2-8-2 was rerailed, the section gang had to deal with replacing a long stretch of chewed up ties.
