FlanaryRon-NW-LN Yard-NortonVA-1969

While looking through some old black and white negatives, I realized I had taken two shots from this point. Both were exposed on May 25, 1969.

The first one is the left half of this composite shot. The track on the far left was the mainline through the yard. Until 1959, passenger trains 5-6 used this route to reach the joint N&W-L&N passenger station, about 2500 feet behind me. The platform on the far left is part of the wooden freight station. The yard office was in this end of the building. Two N&W cabooses (both blue) are shown.

The right half of the image shows N&W SD40 No. 1607, Alco C828 No. 1122, and another SD40. The Alco was most likely one of those leased (and eventually purchased by) the Chicago & Northwestern for ore hauling duties. No L&N power was in Norton at that particular time.

The light-colored building on the right was for the mechanical department, but years later (after termites and rot claimed the old freight station and yard office) it became the yard office and crew quarters.

Today, all facilities at Norton are closed. The yard sees an occasional unit train (loaded or empty) awaiting a crew change.
