US Homicides by Source

Competing data for homicide rate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Center for Disease Control, and the Uniform Crime Reporting tool from the Department of Justice.

The CDC data point for 2001 includes victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, whereas the others exclude those victims. The FBI data point for 2011 is preliminary, and is subject to small changes with the release of the FBI report for 2012 (to be released in 2013).

Sources: CDC - FBI - UCR

The UCR is compiled by the FBI, but the UCR definition for "Homicide and nonnegligent manslaughter" depicted by the UCR is more inclusive than the FBI total homicide figure defined in the FBI Expanded Homicide Report. The CDC figures appear to be more inclusive still.
