Freedom Schooner Amistad
This 120ft schooner is a replica of La Amistad, built at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, by skilled shipwrights using traditional tools and methods between 1998 and 2000. The raked masts give it a an impressive and distinctive appearance. The Amistad represents a very important chapter in New Haven's, and America's history. It was in New Haven, in 1839, where the first court case involving the captured Mende slaves was heard. The case ended in 1842 in the Supreme Court of The United States. After impressive arguments by former President John Quincy Adams, the Court freed the slaves. The trial gave the abolitionists the motivation to keep pushing forward in their efforts to end slavery. An excellent account of the events is here:...law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/amistad/amistd.htm For those that want a little less detail, I would suggest Steven Spielberg's 1997 movie, "Amistad".
