The Prinsengracht, Amsterdam

Facts about the Prinsengracht I picked up whilst drawing this:-

1) "Prinsengracht" means "Prince's Canal" and is named after the Prince of Orange, William I.

2) Anne Frank House - the canal house in which Anne and her family hid from Nazi persecution during WWII - is located along the Prinsengracht.

3) It is the longest of Amsterdam's canals.

4) The Western church is located here and has witnessed the burial of Rembrandt, as well as the marriage of the former Queen of the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix.

5) The Dutch taxing system of the 17th century taxed on the basis of width; the wider the area used beside the canal, the more one was taxed, hence the long, narrow houses standing shoulder to shoulder which line the canal.
