Old Dalby
After revenue traffic to Old Dalby ended on the Midland Railway's former main line between Melton Mowbray and Nottingham the route as far as Edwalton was given over to British Rail's Research & Development Division.
Three diesel hydraulic locos were acquired for use as dead loads on the test track, two class 35 'Hymeks' and a Class 43 'Warship'.
Purely by chance I photographed the one that did not make it into preservation, D7096, on Sunday 3rd February 1980.
Some of the work carried out on the test sites is detailed here -
