Heilig-Geist-Kirche - Church of Holy Spirit
The structure of the church is composed of six hexagons holding hexagonal ceiling and roof structures connected by slim clerestories separating one hexagon from the other as well as larger clerestories for illumination. The concrete walls are covered with painted textiles and the cross is composed of metal detritus resulting from the battle which covered this area of Germany during World War II. Such usage to form a cross was to symbolize both the pain and agony Christ's crucifixion but also his atonement for the of sinsof human-kind. Perhaps less successful are the two white marble pieces of liturgical furniture which were meant to take a phrase from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of Vatican II when it spoke of the pulpit as the table of the Word. Here the artist took the phrase very literally with a pulpit reflecting the size and shape of the altar/table. An unfortunate decision was to substitute straight pews for flexible seating which could have reflected the hexagonal shape of the church room.
