Leipzig's Central Station is, in terms of area, the largest terminus in Europe. Following several different architectural competitions, the cornerstone was laid in 1909. The station opened in 1915, at which time it was one of the largest railway stations in the world. During the 1990s, Central Station was completely renovated and modernised. In late 2013, the City Tunnel, running underneath the station, was opened. All train lines of the Central German S-Bahn pass through the tunnel.
