High Altar canopy, St. Georges Basilica, Gozo.
Built between 1672 and 1678, the basilica is situated in the middle of Gozo’s capital, Victoria and is surrounded by a maze of charming old narrow streets and alleys.
This wonderful parish church is rightly referred to as "the marble basilica" as internally it is entirely covered with marble and gold stucco. The bronze and gold gilded canopy over the high altar is quite amazing surrounded as it is by colourful ceiling and wall paintings and decorations which are of the highest quality.
The effect on the senses is one of enormous power and devotion to God.
