The only British double-decker
You can't really call it 'preserved', more 'stored' on the Northants Ironstone Railway in Northampton. This is one carriage from the two 4-car trains built as an experiment in 1949. Designed by Oliver Bulleid for service on the lines from London to Dartford they were not a success due to extended dwell time at stations and poor ventilation in the upper compartments. Nevertheless they lasted until October 1971 and I actually rode on the last ever trip from Charing Cross home to Eltham. Notice the ingenious honeycomb pattern of compartments, whereby people in the upper compartments were sitting over the heads of those below. A proper double-decker is impossible within the British loading gauge.
