You don't know you'll miss it till its gone....

Broad Street station in London closed in 1986. This picture was actually taken in 1976 when there were still peak hour DMUs to and from Hertford North and other places on the former Great Northern. These were replaced by the through electric service that started that year to nearby Moorgate via the former underground Northern City line. That just left Broad Street served by the North London Line, the line that they had been running down and trying to kill for years. In 1986 they diverted these trains to Stratford, closed the line from Dalston to Broad St and built an enormous office development on the site of Broad Street (not that money was the reason for the closure, no of course not...)

The North London Line is now part of the 'Overground', it is heaving with passengers and the line towards Broad Street has reopened. I say 'towards' as trains veer off at Shoreditch and descend to link with the East London Line. Useful though this might be it means that trains fail to serve central London - which for a suburban line is a pretty major failing!

The "Nat-West Tower" is under construction in the background.

Note also the guard with the oil-lit tail lamp he was about to transfer to the other end of the train.
