There is something odd going on here. That M overtaking has just called at the 'dolly stop' visible behind. If you look amid that gaggle of 'passengers' in the shelter you can see an apparent lighting rig. Also note the 'sound man' with headphones. The bus has adverts for the new 25p flat fare in outer London (more are visible in a rear shot I haven't uploaded). I think I recall that the publicity for this featured an 'M' on route 110. They could have chosen a better day to do this!
Note that 25p was still actually a pretty substantial sum in those days. See below for more details in the comments.
