The 'Mounted Rifleman'

This remote pub was located in a hamlet called Elverton, between Teynham and Faversham, Kent.

It was a classic basic alehouse which served Fremlins bitter on gravity. Since the beer was in the cellar the elderly licencee got a lot of exercise walking up and down the stairs. He retired not long after I took this picture in January 1993 and the pub shut. There may once have been a sitting room at the front, but when I knew it the accommodation was in a small room at the back, the door of which you can see.
